3 Benefits of Toned Muscles

I found this definition of toned muscles to be fascinating. It helped me understand why it is so beneficial to have toned muscles, especially as we get older.

Toned Muscles are muscles in which the individual muscle fibers remained contracted, even when the muscle is at rest.

When your individual muscle fibers remain contracted:

1.) Your muscles are harder. This maintains the shape and texture of the body better.

2.) These contracted muscle fibers help hold your skeleton together better. You will have fewer injuries, especially to joints like the shoulder that rely primarily on muscle tone and strength to maintain the joint.

3.) Your metabolism is higher than if your muscles were not toned. Every year after adolescence, our muscles lose tone. This is part of the decrease in metabolism as we age. By exercising regularly over the decades, we can maintain muscle tone. These muscles with contracted muscle fibers, even at rest, increase our metabolism!

Exercise and toned muscles really are the fountain of youth.
